The copy of Horwood’s Plan below maps the 104 hand-coloured aquatints from Rudolph Ackermann’s Microcosm of London (1808-10) to the locations which they depict (or to the point of view for more panoramic images). 103 of the images used below were kindly provided by the Lewis Walpole Library, the 104th (of the Royal Circus) by the Bishopsgate Institute.
This version of the Plan is zoomed in to the parts of the city within which the vast majority of the plates are located. Five images fall outside the current margins, and one of these locations (Greenwich Hospital), is beyond the bounds of the Plan, but all the markers can be located by scrolling and/or zooming out. In a few cases (such as those of the West India Docks and the Royal Military Asylum at Chelsea), the structures depicted were erected after Horwood completed his surveying; in these cases, the location marked is that where these sights could later be seen. The icons assigned are designed to reflect loosely the type of structure, image or institution the plate depicts; the two less clear cases are the star (state institutions) and the scroll-cornered square (non-state institutions, or locations not falling into another clear category).
The small images pinned to the map do not do full justice to the details of the various plates, which can be seen in larger versions either by right-clicking on them and selecting the ‘Open image in new tab’ option or through using the separate galleries for Volumes One, Two and Three. An introduction to the Microcosm can be read here.
