The map below locates the hundred plates included in Thomas Malton’s A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster, illustrated with the most interesting Views, accurately delineated, and executed in Aquatinta, which was published between 1792 and 1801. Ninety-eight of the plates were provided for use on this site by the British Library (from a copy in the General Reference Collection with the classmark 190.f.7). Two plates are missing from this copy; substitutes were kindly supplied by the Lewis Walpole Library. These were Plate No. 77, ‘The Tower’ (Topos L847 no. 105+) and Plate No. 78, ‘The Great Court of the Tower’ (Topos L847 no. 107+). Alongside the plates, Malton’s book includes an extensive text describing the history, topography and aesthetic impact of the city. Its considerable length precludes it being subjoined to the images here, but it is an interesting account in itself and well worth consulting.
